A multifaceted individual, Sunil Gupta is a musician whose new single âBahut Zyaada Khoobsurat Hai Tu' released recently. The track sees the filmmaker and author transition from telling stories on screen (MX Player series Woh Pehli Baar) and in books (the novel Life Can Be Beautiful) to merging his thoughts with melodies through music.
Known for creating thought-provoking narratives in his various projects, including the touching short film Ladke Rote Hai, Gupta now invites audiences to groove to a tune that encapsulates the essence of love and celebration - "Bahut Zyaada Khoobsurat Hai Tu". In this exclusive interview, Sunil Gupta speaks to us about his creative influences, navigating various mediums, releasing a dance track about love and more.
You come from a background of business, writing and filmmaking. What led you to explore music while wearing all these different hats?

All art is an exploration. Applying this as a practice has led me to new experiences that connect with and enrich each other. It's been an immensely rewarding journey to create in the mediums of writing, filmmaking, even business and now music.
While being a groovy, dance track, the music video for 'Bahut Zyaada Khoobsurat Hai Tu' also showcases a heartwarming romantic concept. What inspired the sound and visuals of this song?
The song was inspired by a wish to spread some love and optimism in the world. Music, dance and romance go well together. Hence, the groovy production with two relatable characters in the music video.
As a multidisciplinary artist, what pushed you to collaborate with influencers/actors Mohak Manghani and Cherry Mardia?
Both Mohak and Cherry are creative forces in their field. They're versatile artists who brought their enthusiasm and brilliant on-screen chemistry to the music video. It was a joy to collaborate with them for âBahut Zyaada Khoobsurat Hai Tu'.
What was your creative process for making the track 'Bahut Zyaada Khoobsurat Hai Tu' like? How did the song come about from an idea in your mind to a fully recorded single?
Before I started making this song, I would often wake up and find myself humming a tune. As time passed, I began recording notes and melodies. And just like that, the composition, production, lyrics, vocals and recording followed. In music, I have found a creative channel as well as a loving community.
Independent pop music has been on a meteoric rise in India. What drew you to the genre?
I admire pop because it's a genre that is very versatile and appealing to everyone. It has been amazing to witness pop music's rise in India because it pushes me and more musicians to follow their dreams.
You've spoken about how your musical influences are artists from the yesteryear era. What about these timeless songs stays with you and how did they nudge you to create a contemporary pop track for newer generations since then?
These were the songs I grew up with - the music of Kishore Kumar ji, Mohammed Rafi ji and Lata Mangeshkar ji as well as Michael Jackson and George Michael. It's a great joy to now be able to share some of that with younger generations while also trying to engage with my own sound as a person who lives in the 21st century.
What do you hope people take away from 'Bahut Zyaada Khoobsurat Hai Tu'?
I hope people take away that life and love can be fun and positive. Dancing is also a great way to forget about one's troubles and live in the moment. So I hope their hearts feel lighter after listening to and watching the music video of "Bahut Zyaada Khoobsurat Hai Tu".
What can your audience expect next from you?
There are a few songs in the pipeline as well as a couple of writing projects. I'm grateful for the audience's love and support and I'm looking forward to bringing you all more art.
