Asit Kumar Patnaik with his painting
Irresistible Relations showcases a greater infusion of cosmopolitanism and contemporary sensibility than his earlier work. His central theme, the intricate tapestry of human relationships between man and woman in its multifaceted manifestations, has perpetually possessed a universally compelling nature, as interpersonal connections are an enduring concern that transcends geographical and temporal boundaries, embracing people from all corners of the world throughout history.

The new series builds on that theme, but the works now embody an additional layer of diversity, vitality, energy and enthusiasm, in the lines, textures and the use of colours. There is a far greater openness and abandon, a palpable delight in diversity, which probably feeds off Patnaik's frequent travels and exhibitions abroad in recent years. The figures still dominate the canvas, but they now seem to be more agile, more animated and more mobile. This mobility is not inspired by the freedom of youth, but the mellowness of the mid-career pilgrim, too rooted in his craft and home to be unsettled by foreign charms and yet open enough to soak in new sensibilities and forge new partnerships.
Patnaik is keen to build a home in the world at large, even as his fantasies remain rooted in the villages and small towns where he spent his early life, boldly in search of growth and expansion and yet adhering firmly to the here and now. Ecumenical Relations is a moment in this search; the primary impulse is to reach out and look within at the same instance.
The dominant impulse of the series is to reach out, to initiate a conversation, not out of an urge for company or exploration but of a desire to share and to co-create, to make meanings and evolve together, taking the viewers into confidence and together generate a sustainable legacy of mutual engagement beyond binaries and dualities and towards shared multiplicities as a matter of course.
The exhibition was inaugurated by renowned singer and performer Sona Mohapatra. It will run at the Jehangir Art Gallery between 18 and 23 October.
