Adult comedy Great Grand Masti made a tragic impact in its opening weekend, collecting Rs 8.25 crore in three days. The third instalment of the Masti franchise recorded just about 15 to 20 per cent occupancy in theatres on day one with trade pundits blaming it on piracy. The film was leaked online days ahead of its theatrical release, forcing the makers to take it to theatres a week in advance.

Poor reviews also worked against the film as it struggled to compete with holdover hit, Salman Khan-starrer Sultan, and Ice Age: Collision Course, the fourth instalment of Ice Age. The Hollywood animation flick stayed ahead of the adult comedy, albeit marginally (Rs 8.5 crore). Sultan has. so far, minted Rs 263.23 crore.

Trade guru Amod Mehra says, "The film was supposed to do much better than its previous instalment, Grand Masti (2013), which had grossed over Rs 100 crore. However, like most other sex comedies that have released in recent times, this one was a failure right from the word go. Sultan slowed down in its second weekend, but managed decent collections."

According to trade expert Taran Adarsh, the online leak coupled with competition from Sultan spelt doom for the adult comedy.

"People had already seen the pirated version, leading to poor occupancy in theatres. Had it entered theatres two weeks later, it could have done better since a strong Sultan wave still continues," adds Adarsh.
