A Christmas Carol
U; 3d Animation
Dir: Robert Zemeckis
Cast: Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth
''
What's it about: Robert Zemeckis seems to be obsessed with making 3D animation films. After Polar Express (2004) and Beowulf (2006) he now remakes the classic Charles Dickens' holiday tale about a stingy old man named Scrooge (Carrey) and his hatred for the festive season.

Different from the numerous adaptations of the past, this one is all about using the latest wizardry and technology to make a big budget animation tale. Set in London during Christmas, the story revolves around the three ghosts who visit Scrooge and want to instill compassion and love into his cruel heart.

What's hot: Carrey seems to be a popular choice for XMas movies. He was superb as the evil Grinch who stole Christmas but as Scrooge, he takes on a totally different character.
A master of disguise, Carrey uses his voice and mannerisms to his advantage playing not just one but multiple characters with ease. The animation in the first half is remarkable especially the way the camera paints the 19th century London landscape.
What's not: The combination of using 3D and regular animation goes awry in most parts. Zemeckis substitutes story-telling with computer mastery. Also there are too many characters that look lifeless and dull, almost like sketches rejected on an animator's desk.
There is an overdose of animation in places that doesn't require visual brilliance but a simple and lucid narrative. Scrooge's interaction with the three ghosts is forced and lacks emotions. Carrey's indulgence in playing different characters takes a toll on the plot overall.
What to do: If you missed Jim Carrey long enough, then go watch him do what he does best. Otherwise this adaptation is just a premise for Zemeckis to show off his infatuation with 3D.
