Amit, who shot to fame with movies like Aamir, Dev D is awaiting the release of his new film. CS chats up with him

It's a bad day for singer-lyricist-composer Amit Trivedi. To start off, his AC is not working; he's running late and as we talk, he's just dropped the glass of water in his hand. He apologises profusely but his spirits aren't dampened. Amit, who shot to fame with movies like Aamir, Dev D is awaiting the release of his new film. CS chats up with him:

Striking gold

While I had to wait for around 10 years for a break in a major film, I feel I have been quite lucky career wise. I've had my share of tough times, but God's been very kind to me. I feel blessed to have got the chance to work with directors like Raj Kumar Gupta and Anurag Kashyap, who gave me full freedom to do my own thing. Yes, I would like to work with big banners also, but I don't want to succumb to pressures from producers and directors. The music of the new film is very youthful, with rock and club elements. There are au00a0 couple of soulful tracks as well.

Mentor magic

Anurag Kashyap is my mentor, and he means the world to me. He saw the talent in me, and gave me a platform like Dev D to showcase my skills to the public. It is very commendable on his part to encourage youngsters with every film. He can identify a chartbuster from its onset.

A different beat

I like using varied music forms in my films, but it totally depends on the storyline and characters. I won't use different styles if the script doesn't demand it.

Dev D gave me room to experiment, so I could incorporate different styles in the music. As it was a tale of a modern Devdas, who was high on drugs, the music was trippy too. But it was only when the album got completed, and we heard it, that we realised it was the 'baap' of all genres.

My play list

I spend hours listening to Bollywood film music, as it is multi-genre and quite educative. Besides, I hear a lot of pop, rock, jazz, punk, Sufi, Indian folk. I grew up listening to the Beatles, Abba and Pink Floyd. Right now, I am totally hooked on to Coldplay. My inspiration includes music directors like RD Burman, AR Rehman and Madan Mohan.

Moody musician

I am totally whacked out. I talk loudly to myself, can be quite unpredictable or plain hyper. But thankfully, I'm practical and understanding when it comes to music. A lot of people might think that I'm crazy thanks to songs like Emosanal Attyachaar, but that's somewhat true.
