Ash Chandler, we like it!

25 May,2012 06:20 AM IST |   |  Deepali Dhingra

We know him as a stand-up comedian but the fact is that Ash Chandler has been a professional actor for the past 24 years.

Calculate that and you'll know that the actor's in the prime of his life at the moment. Ash is currently playing the lead in a film which has ageing as its theme. With a new wife on one side, and a broken arm on the other, the result of a minor accident, Ash tells CS about ageing gracefully in B-town.

Good stories have nothing to do with age
I think world over, larger demographic of people are aspirationally drawn towards youth-driven subjects or youth in general. Youth is such a global obsession. Everybody is trying to delay the onset of ageing to a great extent worldwide. There is an obsession to hold on to the idea of youth for as long as we can. There is a bulk of popular entertainment out there that caters to that segment that wants to delay ageing. But I think there is a change. There are films like Cheeni Kum and many others that are responding to good stories that have nothing to do with ageing or not ageing. The idea that all masses want escapism isn't exactly true.

It's all about survival
I'm not the one who said it originally, but each wrinkle of mine is like an award. I went through that. It gives me a sense of entitlement, that I lived through every minute of the 80s and most of the 70s! I feel proud to have survived it all. We all know life is about survival. I don't want to retract from anything I did, because I went through all that and proud I came out of it.

Lessons learnt
As a comedian I have used relationships as great fodder. But I've learnt a few things after marriage. One of the things I've learnt is you have to know which battles to fight. The longer you live, you realise that most battles are not worth fighting. When you're 20 years old and in a relationship, everything is a call to arms. ‘If you don't meet my aunty today I will break up with you!' Everything is a make or break situation. But when you're in a mature relationship, nothing is a make or break situation. The only thing you're sure of that is that this is person I want to be with, so this is just a situation that must be overcome. It's much harder to make fun of relationships now. I said harder, there's still lots of stuff I can talk about! (laughs) Also I find it very helpful to wake up in the morning and say ‘I'm sorry'. That seems to be the secret. No way anyone can argue with that!
