The marriage theme seems to be a hot favourite with writers these days. A week back Chetan Bhagat released his book, 2 States (The Story of my Marriage), and yesterday Bhagwati Mittal followed suit with Vivaha: The Celebration. She talks about the book:

Decoding rituals

The book is about the science behind marriage rituals. For instance, most of us don't know the significance attached to the Ganesh puja that happens before a wedding.

He's got a long nose so that He can sense danger when it is near, and small eyes so that He can keep a watch over everything without getting judgemental.

The haldi ceremony, which is usually done with a lot of fanfare has its roots in science. Haldi is usually applied on the bride because it is an antiseptic and is good for the skin. As a result, the dulhan can look her best prior to the wedding.

All this while I was busy raising my children and taking care of the family. Then when I got the time, I decided to do something for the society Vivaha is my attempt at familiarising the Indian youth with the various traditions and rituals associated with marriage.

Most youngsters these days will opt out of the marriage rituals if given a choice. But, I feel that if they are explained the significance and science behind these very customs, they'll want to incorporate them in their weddings too.

Looking back

When I was young marriages were very different. We all ended up having arranged marriages by default. I was 16 years old when I tied the knot.

Both my daughters are married now and rituals have been an important part of their wedding ceremonies too. I hope to keep the tradition alive through my book.
