Punjabi star Gippy Grewal on next instalment of hit franchise, Carry On Jatta, and new single, Sooraj

Gippy Grewal

Gippy Grewal is content - both as an actor and musician. While his latest film, Carry On Jatta 2, had a great run at the box office, his new single, Sooraj, has got a warm reception from music aficionados. In a telephonic chat from Canada, the actor-singer tells mid-day why the number is special.

Edited excerpts from the interview:

What inspired you to work on Sooraj?
My slow number, Channa, from the film Jihne Mera Dil Luteya (2011) was lauded by music lovers. So I was itching to work on something on similar lines. That's how Sooraj came about. I'm glad T-Series supported it.

Apart from singing, were you also involved in other creative processes while making the track?
I am always involved in all the aspects of creating a song. In case of Sooraj, I had told lyricist Jaani to pen the lyrics keeping a slow-paced song in mind. I briefed B Praak [composer] about the 'feel' it should have. I also worked on the concept and story of the video.

You often collaborate with B Praak. How is this association different from the previous ones?
Most of our collaborations have resulted in the creation of upbeat dance songs. Our last single, Car Nachdi, with Bohemia, was entirely at odds with this song. This is an emotional number and I haven't sung such a composition before.

What do you enjoy more, music or acting?
Neither of the two is a job for me. They are my life, love and passion. I feel fortunate that my passion became my profession.

The second instalment of your hit franchise, Carry On Jatta (2012), released recently and garnered rave reviews. Is a third part of the film in the pipeline?
I am grateful that it got good reviews. It took us six years to come up with the film. The Carry On Jatta series is among the most loved Punjabi films today. Both the films did well, even from a business point of view. So you can certainly expect the third instalment. It's likely to go on floors next year.
