His collections always spell glamour and red carpet in caps, and that is what we love about fashion designer Nikhil Thampi's work. His collection this season, called Alchemy, will be a tad different with the focus on bridal wear including lehengas and saris.
"We have been known as an evening wear, red carpet label. But the market demands wedding wear. And I thought it was time to earn the big bucks," Thampi tells us. The collection will feature 24 looks and the fabrics used include dupion silk, pure silk, linen, cotton and polyester blends.
"The idea was to reinvent existing silhouettes, so, be it sari, anarkali or salwar kameez, it will have an innovative shape. It seemed like a pretty collection in my head, but as we developed it, it turned out to be very fashion forward and bold. So, you will have a sari without a blouse but with a metal patch or a dupatta that also works as a neckpiece. The embroidery is generic, but there will be my signature metal sheen, in the form of cut-outs for surface embellishment," he adds. The colours will range from whites to gold, mango, vermillion and nudes. Thampi has also collaborated with footwear and accessories designer, Aprajita Toor, to design the footwear for the collection.
The show, which will take place on the first day of the fashion week on August 26, will witness live percussion music by musician Sarthak Mudgal.

"Couture in India is wedding wear and after a point of time, one has to venture into it. I will, too, with this collection but it will be true to my style," Thampi concludes.
