Madhur's latest film Jail has explicit scenes of homosexuality in prison. However, the censor board has seriously modified the scenes.

In one sequence, two jailmates make love while making loud appreciative sounds of pleasure all the time using expletives and colourful language. The censors asked Madhur to delete the sounds in the scene.

Men, men... many men: A still from Jail

Why be afraid?

The director is none too pleased about it. "These are things that are part of our life. Squalidity and sexual exploitation are seen everywhere in our society. Why should I as a mainstream filmmaker be afraid to show the reality? In fact, Chandni Bar had far more graphic sequences of sexual abuse in jail where Tabu's son was forced to perform sexual acts by two bullies. Those scenes weren't cut because I agreed to an 'A' certificate."

This time, Madhur didn't want an A certificate. "So I deleted some of the language including the word 'ch'''ya' and also the dialogues and sounds from the gay love-making scene. Page 3 also had a sequence showing two men making out. It got a U/A certificate."

KEEPING IT REAL...
Madhur was also asked to block out Neil's scenes of frontal nudity."It wasn't as if Neil was stripping for titillation. Prisoners are made to stand naked to humiliate and scare them. I had to block out Neil's genitals. I told the censor board I might as well make candyfloss if this is how they react to my representation of reality.

They protested and said I must continue doing what I am doing."
