The actor is playing Kancha Cheena, the villain essayed by Danny Denzongpa in the original.

What's news, however, is that his look in the remake (which has Hrithik Roshan playing Vijay Dinanath Chauhan, originally essayed by the Big B) has been inspired by Marlon Brando's Colonel Walter Kurtz in the 1979 Apocalypse Now.
When contacted, director Karan Malhotra conceded that Brando's look had been at the back of his mind.

"I must admit that I'm in awe of that look for sure, but Sanju sir has taken the next step forward," he said, adding that the actor went by his vision completely.
Probed further if Dutt suggested the earrings, Malhotra maintained that he himself had thought of them while creating the character of Kancha Cheena.
He stated, "Sanju sir is not the kind of person who interferes. He goes by what the director says, and I'm lucky to have an actor who goes by the graph of his character and the movie."
