Tony's career spanned six decades and he acted in over 60 films. In his later years, he made numerous TV appearances. He won his first serious recognition as a skilled actor in Sweet Smell of Success and then went on to star in films like The Defiant Ones and Some Like it Hot.u00a0
When Tony was eight, he and his younger brother Julius were placed in an orphanage because their parents could not afford to feed them. Four years later, Julius was struck and killed by a truck.
Tony went on to join a neighbourhood gang. At 11, a neighbour saved him from what he feels would have led to a life of delinquency, by sending him to a Boy Scout camp, where he was able to settle down and work off his energy.
Tony served in the Navy during World War II and, upon his release joined university to study drama.He was married six times. His first wife was actress Janet Leigh from 1951 to 1962.
After their divorce, Tony married Christine Kaufmann, the 17-year-old German co-star of Taras Bulba. They divorced in 1968. Tony even dated Marilyn Monroe before she became a star.
