There's no denying the fact that AR Rahman is a musical maestro. Hailed as one of the greatest Indian musicians of all time, Rahman forayed into the world of music in the early 90s, and his dominance as a music composer grew exponentially with each passing year. Known for giving memorable background scores for blockbuster movies like 'Roja', 'Bombay', 'Taal', 'Lagaan', 'Swades', 'Rang De Basanti' to name a few, Rahman is also a sought-after singer who has sung the iconic song, 'Vande Mataram'. While Rahman's musical prowess spans from Bollywood to down South, the musical genius has made his presence felt on the global map and has made India proud with his melodious songs and captivating voice. As the virtuoso is turning a year older today, we take a look at some of his iconic international collaborations that took the western world by storm.
Jai Ho: 'Jai Ho', the song from the movie, 'Slumdog Millionaire', is arguably the most popular work of AR Rahman which earned him global recognition like no other. The song featuring Dev Patel and Frieda Pinto marked the collaboration between Rahman and Hollywood director Danny Boyle. The chartbuster that put India on the global map also helped bag Rahman an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and the prestigious BAFTA award!
If I Rise: The song which marked the collaboration between AR Rahman and Hollywood singer and songwriter, Dido, 'If I Rise' is the song that features in the James Franco-starrer 2010 hit movie, '127 Hours'. Described as soulful and spine-chilling, the track can be heard in the background throughout the movie.
Million Dollar Arm: Title Track: In 2014, AR Rahman joined forces with Australian rapper, Iggy Azalea to produce the title track for the Jon Hamm-starrer, biographical sports drama called 'Million Dollar Arm'. From the melodious fusion of western and southeastern beats to its power-packed lyrics, the song rightfully sets the tempo of the film.
