Mani Ratnam and Shah Rukh Khan
Filmmaker Mani Ratnam and actor Shah Rukh Khan last collaborated on the 1998 film 'Dil Se...' Now, all these years later, the actor-director duo were under the same roof for the CNN News18 award on Wednesday in Delhi. After winning the Indian of The Year award, Shah Rukh Khan was quizzed by the host as to when he would make another film with Mani Ratnam.
At the award ceremony, Shah Rukh Khan even begged for a film with Mani Ratnam. "Mani sir, what now?" he said, adding, "It's all come out in the open now. I'm requesting you - I'm begging you - I'm telling you every time! Do a film with me, I swear, I will dance on top of a plane on Chhaiya Chhaiya, if you'd tell me." The song 'Chaiyaya Chaiyya' continues to be one of the go-to party dance songs. The original song composed by AR Rahman saw SRK and Malaika Arora dance atop a train.
Responding to Khan, Mani Ratnam who was seated in the audience said he would do a film with him when he buys a plane. To this, Khan quickly said, "Mani, the way my films are goingâ¦this plane is not far away. I'm coming!"
Later, when the event was wrapping up, actor Shah Rukh Khan even joked with Mani Ratnam, "Thank you, Mani Sir, for the film! March, I'll be there, sir. Morning shift, 2 pm."

Mani Ratnam, Kamal Haasan, Ali Fazal in New Delhi to shoot for ‘Thug Life’
Mani Ratnam who was honoured with the Indian Of The Year Award 2023 in the field of Entertainment opened up about his much-awaited reunion with Kamal Haasan. Asked what took him so long to reunite with Kamal Haasan, Mani Ratnam shared, "I can't say what took me so long. It is tough when you have an actor of that capability, who has done several things. So unless you have some solid things, do not go to him just because you have done it before. Hopefully, we would be able to bring some kind of a character back on screen."
The filmmaker who has worked with the biggest of stars said that big stars do not have ego problems. "I don't think big stars have real egos when they are on a project. Really, it has never been difficult to work with the stars. If you are clear and know what you want, they are too happy to have somebody make the decisions. They trust you, you trust them. It becomes a mutual thing. You make it together. Sometimes, scripts demand new faces and that's why you go for new faces. I do it only because it is right for my film not because I want to introduce somebody," he added.
