Anand Bhaskar
Even though Mirzapur composer Anand Bhaskar's recent project, Main Monica released on Amazon Prime Video without clamour, the film's score, inspired by music from the '60s through the '90s, is particularly worthy of attention. "The series doesn't depend on intentional or slapstick comedy. It is the situations that the characters encounter that result in [comedy]. It is based in dance bars, but is set in current times," says Bhaskar, who employed retro funk, and disco to create the eight-track score.
Having previously dabbled in genres like "Indian [classical] and world cinema music", Bhaskar was stepping into unknown territory with this venture. "We studied music from the '60s through the '90s. All the songs had the common thread of quirkiness that linked them together.
When you listen to them, you will come across music that will pique your interest. One song is a subtle '90s pop song, another is modelled on songs like Piya tu and Badan pe sitare, which are Bollywood classics. While we were traversing genres, we knew that the music needed to sound Indian. I had to understand what the older legendary makers were thinking [while preparing the songs], and had to strip down the songs' anatomy. While we started exploring the melody on the guitar, we later began to give them the genre-based production approach."
