Independence Day 2024: The Indian Independence day has been a big date for major Hindi film releases over the years. The holiday has been reserved for some of the biggest releases of the years. As Stree 2, Khel Khe Mein and Vedaa gear up for a clash this Independence day, we look back at the collections of the previous years

Chennai Express (August 8, 2013) 

While it was released days before the I-Day weekend, the film saw a big opening. The Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone-starrer opened at Rs 33.12 cr and entered the 100 crore club in the first weekend. The film has a lifetime collection of Rs 227.13 cr 

Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara! (August 15, 2013) 

A decade ago, Akshay Kumar's film opened at Rs 11. 25 crore at the box office on Independence Day. The film collected Rs 40 cr in its opening weekend and collected Rs 61 cr lifetime

Entertainment ( August 8, 2014) 

The film was released a week before the Independence Day weekend to avoid clashing with Rohit Shetty's 'Singham Returns'. The film collected Rs 11.16 cr on its opening day while it collected Rs 36.69 cr in its first weekend. The film has a lifetime collections of Rs 72.02 cr

Singham Returns (August 15, 2014) 

After the super success of Singham, Ajay Devgn returned as the daredevil cop taking forward Rohit Shetty's 'Singham' franchise. The film had a whopping Rs 32.09 cr opening and collected Rs 77.69 cr by the end of the first weekend. The film has a lifetime collection of Rs 140.62 cr 

Brothers (August 14, 2015) 

The Akshay Kumar, Sidharth Malhotra-starrer opened at the box office at a whopping Rs 15.20 cr. The film collected Rs 52.08 cr in the first weekend and ended its theatrical run with a lifetime collection of  Rs 82.47 cr at the domestic box office

Rustom (August 12, 2016) 

Akshay Kumar and Ileana D'Crus-starrer clashed at the box office with Hrithik Roshan's 'Mohenjodaro' in 2016. The film won the race at the box office as it opened at Rs 14.11 cr and collected Rs 50.42 cr in its opening weekend. The film has a lifetime collection of Rs 127. 49 cr in India

 

Mohenjo Daro (August 12, 2016) 

The historical film starring Hrithik and Pooja Hegde opened at Rs 8.87 cr and clashed with Rustom at the box office. The film collected Rs 30.54 cr in its opening weekend and has a lifetime of Rs 58 cr

Toilet-Ek Prem Katha (August 11, 2017) 

The social drama starring Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar opened at Rs 13.10 cr and collected Rs 51.45 cr in its first weekend. The film has a lifetime collection of Rs 134.22 cr

Satyamev Jayate (August 15, 2018) 

The patriotic film starring John Abraham opened at Rs 19.50 cr at the box office on day 1. The film collected Rs  52.25 cr on its first weekend and has a lifetime collections of Rs 80.50 cr

Gold (August 15, 2018) 

Clashing with Satyamev Jayate, Akshay Kumar's sports drama collected Rs 25.25 cr on day 1. The film collected Rs 70.05 cr in its opening weekend and Rs 104.72 cr lifetime

Batla House ( August 15, 2019) 

The John Abraham-starrer faced a clash with Mission Mangal. Despite that, the film managed to collect Rs 14 cr on opening day. It was far off than Mission Mangal's Rs 29 cr opening. In its first weekend, the Nikkhil Advani-directorial collected Rs 43.5 cr. The film has a lifetime of Rs 87.22 cr 

Mission Mangal (August 15, 2019) 

Akshay Kumar's last big release before the pandemic was this film. The film collected Rs 29.16 cr on day 1 and closed the weekend at Rs. 97.56 cr. The film that also stars Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, and Nithya Menen has a lifetime collection of Rs 202.98 cr

Bellbottom (August 19, 2021)

The Akshay Kumar, Lara Dutta, and Huma Qureshi-starrer released in the theatres despite restrictions in theatre seating amid the pandemic. The film opened at Rs 2.75 crore and was released on OTT platform, a month after its theatrical release

Laal Singh Chaddha (August 11, 2022) 

Aamir Khan's ambitious film, a remake of 'Forrest Gump' claashed with Akshay Kumar's 'Raksha Bandhan' at the box office. The film opened at Rs 11.7 cr and went on to collect Rs 37.96 cr in its opening weekend. The film has a lifetime collection of Rs 58.73 cr

Raksha Bandhan (August 11, 2022) 

This was the first independence day release after complete relaxation of lockdown rules for theatres post the pandemic. Akshay Kumar's film was released alongside Aamir Khan's 'Laal Singh Chaddha'. The Akshay Kumar film based on sibling love opened at Rs 8.20 cr. The film collected Rs 28.16 cr in its opening weekend and has a lifetime collection of Rs 44.39 cr

Gadar 2 (August 11, 2023) 

Riding high on nostalgia, the film had a historic opening at the box office collecting Rs 40 crore on day 1. The film sawa rise as it collected over Rs 43 crore on day 2. With this, the film has become the second highest opener of the year behind 'Pathaan'

OMG 2 (August 11, 2023) 

Keeping up with his Independence Day release tradition, Akshay brought OMG 2 last year where he played the messenger of God. Despite a clash with 'Gadar 2', the film managed to rise at the box office in its own way. The film collected a total of Rs 150 crore in India declaring it a superhit
