Janmashtami is here! The auspicious celebration of Lord Krishna's birthday. With a variety of rituals, the festival is observed across the nation

Everybody celebrates the occasion in their own unique way, whether it be by making sweets and savoury dishes or performing amazing dances

The festival is celebrated by offering prayers to Lord Krishna, with beautifully decorated swings, dance and music performances, and the Dahi Handi competition

The day mostly falls in the months of August or September as per the Western calendar

Janmashtami is a Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna. As per the Hindu calendar, Lord Krishna, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, was born on the eighth day of the month of Bhadra

According to the 'Mahabharata', Lord Krishna gave the message of the Gita to Arjuna during the battle of Kurukshetra. It is an Upanishad given under Bhisma Parva of Mahabharata

Hema Malini stunned in a pretty pink ghagra-choli, paired with a neon green dupatta. Her other outfit had a white ghagra-choli, paired with a pink stole

Hema Malini shared a post, and captioned it, "It is that festival tonite which we all look fwd to with joy & enthusiasm"

Hema Malini further added, "Yes! It is Shri Krishna Janmashtami, which celebrates the birth of the Lord who came to earth to annihilate all evil. His Bhagvat Gita is acknowledged as the best treatise on how to live an honorable life"

Chants and hymns in praise of Lord Krishna reverberated in streets and nooks of the country as devotees turned up in large numbers at various temples to celebrate Janmashtami
