"With a heavy heart and profound grief, I announce the passing away of our beloved Dilip Saab a few minutes ago. We are from God and to Him, we return," said the thespian's longtime aide Faisal Farooqui in a tweet at daybreak on 7 July.

Shah Rukh Khan was one of the first few who came in to pay their respects to Dilip Kumar at his residence in Bandra. He was even seen consoling Saira Banu.

The 'Tragedy King' who excelled in broad comedy too, could play a prince or a peasant, a betrayed lover or a stern patriarch or with equal ease, display profound intensity or a jaunty nonchalance with the same skill, Dilip Kumar repeatedly reinvented himself as both an actor and a person. In picture: Ranbir Kapoor also came in to pay his final respects to Dilip Kumar.

Veteran actor Dharmendra also came in to pay his respects to Dilip Kumar. Dharmendra said, "I have lost my brother today. I will live with his memories in my heart."

Around 9.30 a.m., an ambulance carrying Dilip Kumar's mortal remains left for his home in Bandra west, with his wife of Saira Banu Khan accompanying along with some family members. In picture: Filmmaker Karan Johar also came in to offer condolence to Dilip Kumar's family.

Johnny Lever was also one of the celebrities who reached Dilip Kumar's residence to pay respects. Lever too shared a post on social media, mourning the loss of Dilip Kumar. He wrote, "RIP Dilip Sahab. I’m fortunate enough to have shared some precious moments with the great Dilip Sahab. I remember he did a small mimicry act for me while we were on tour, he served me Biryani once with his own hands at his home, and many more such beautiful memories…It was amazing to see how such a great personality like him could be so humble & grounded. He is an institution we love & learnt so much from. May his soul rest in peace, & may God give strength to Saira ji & his family. [sic]"

Veteran actor Raza Murad, who is among the few celebrities to share the screen space with Dilipji, also came in to pay his respects at Dilip Kumar's residence in Bandra.

Anil Kapoor also came in to pay his respects to Dilip Kumar. On his Twitter, Anil mourned the demise of Dilip Saab and wrote: "Our world is a little less bright today because one of our biggest stars has left us for the heavens. Dilip Sahab was very close to my father and I had tremendous honour of sharing screen-space with him in three of my most memorable films... He was and will always be the finest and greatest actor of our industry for me... he has inspired generations of artists. Rest in peace, Dilip Sahab. You remain in our minds and hearts forever. [sic]"

Anupam Kher also came in to pay his respects to Dilip Kumar. On his Twitter handle Kher wrote, "The legend lives on!! There is and there will always be a part of #DilipKumar Saab in every Indian actor for generations to come! His performances were like magic. Thank you Sir for those amazing moments i could spend with you! You taught me so much about life, living & acting! [sic]"

Vidya Balan and husband Siddharth Roy Kapur also came in to pay their last respects to Dilip Kumar.
