J. K. Rowling's 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' has been named the UK's favourite children's book by a poll.

In the poll conducted by Booktrust where 24000 readers of all ages cast their votes, the first novel of the wizard series left behind ‘The Hunger Games and Roald Dahl's ‘BFG', the BBC reported.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Winnie-the-Pooh concluded the top five, while ‘The Fellowship of the Ring' by JRR Tolkien secured the 7th position.

Dr Seuss's ‘The Cat in the Hat', Charlotte's Web by EB White and CS Lewis's ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe' came in the top 10 of the list.

Booktrust experts began with a list of 500 titles, which were skimmed down to 100, while being grouped into age categories.

‘The Philosopher's Stone' won in the 9-12 age group, and ‘The Hungry Caterpillar' was named as the ultimate book for children up to the age of five.u00a0
