A group of elderly women, some of whom had medical conditions, were barred entry for wearing rhinestone flats for the screening of Todd Haynes's Carol.
Among those hit by the no-flats diktat was British film director Asif Kapadia's wife Victoria Harwood. The filmmaker whose documentary Amy was screened at the festival tweeted, "Happened to my wife (eventually let in)." There has been a hue and cry over the footwear rule for women. British actress Emily Blunt has criticised the festival authorities after women not wearing heels were denied access to movie screenings. Shabana Azmi tweeted, ". Shocking report that Cannes bans flats on red carpet! Director of Amy Asif Kapadia says his wife was given rough time 2. Unacceptable surely."
