Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer said he would "love" to have Johnny Depp return to the supernatural swashbuckler film series, reprising his role as Jack Sparrow. During a recent interview, the movie mogul was asked if the former verdict of the news-making defamation trial with Amber Heard would lead Disney to get Depp back in the franchise.
That Depp sued his ex-wife Heard, for libel, and she counter-sued has been extensively reported. The high-profile case played out over several weeks earlier this year, during which Depp stated that Heard destroyed his reputation with her 2018 op-ed in The Washington Post, in which she said that she was a victim of abuse. At the end of the marathon trial, Heard was ordered to pay $10.35 million to Depp. The jury also awarded Heard $2 million in her counter-suit. Earlier this week, his attorneys issued a statement saying that Heard and Depp had settled for $1 million.

Bruckheimer, who produced the five Pirates films starring Depp, said in the interview that he can't speak for Disney as far as the actor's return as Jack Sparrow is concerned. "I really don't know," he maintained. He added, "I would love to have Johnny in the movie. He's a friend, a terrific actor and it is unfortunate that personal lives creep into everything we do."
When told that Depp "hinted that if he were to return, the film should have a clear ending for his character," Bruckheimer was asked if he would ever kill off the character of Jack Sparrow. "You can't. We tried to kill him. It didn't work," replied the producer who has also made The Lone Ranger, with Depp, besides films like Pearl Harbor, Remember the Titans, Top Gun, and TV series like Amazing Race and CSI.
