Trevor Noah's Will Smith jab at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards was inevitable. "We're gonna be listening to some music, we're gonna be dancing, we're gonna be singing. We're going to be keeping people's names out of our mouths and we will be giving out awards all through the night," the inimitable comedian and host said at the musical gala, which gave a platform to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to address the audience. Zelensky spoke of Ukrainian musicians in body armour and appealed for support. "The war - what's more opposite than music?" Zelensky said. "We defend our freedom. To live. To love. To sound. In our land, we are fighting Russia which brings horrible silence with their bombs. The dead silence. Fill the silence with your music! Fill it today. To tell our story. Tell the truth about war."
The big winner was Jon Batiste, who entered the night with 11 nominations, and walked away with the Grammys' top prize. In regard to music, he said, "It's more than entertainment for me - it's a spiritual practice." Olivia Rodrigo won for Best Pop Vocal Album, Best New Artist and Best Pop Solo Performance.
Bruno Mars' Silk Sonic won the Record of the Year and Song of the Year (Leave the door open). The group project of Bruno Mars, Brandon Anderson, Christopher Brody Brown, Dernst Emile II also won Best R&B Song as well as Best R&B Performance. However, Mars faced brickbats for lighting a cigarette on stage while accepting his award.
Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins was honoured at the In Memoriam segment that was set to a rendition of Somewhere, from the musical West Side Story. "This was the moment in the show when I was supposed to be introducing the Foo Fighters," Noah said at the event. "We would have been celebrating with them as they won three Grammy Awards earlier today, but they are, of course, not here because of the tragic passing of their legendary drummer Taylor Hawkins."
