In a rare instance, a classic Hindi film is being remade in Marathi
'Shaukeen'
Director Mrunalinni Patil's latest Marathi film - it is as yet untitled - is said to be a remake of the popular Hindi film, 'Shaukeen'.
Still from 'Shaukeen'
But Patil, who agrees that her film takes inspiration from 'Shaukeen', is keen to point out that it is not an out-and-out copy. "My film deals with this subject in a contemporary fashion, and I have just taken a few references from the film, 'Shaukeen'. The question of announcing it as a remake doesn't arise at all," she emphasises.

So is the Marathi film industry open to adult comedies? Patil says that the genre is not a new one. "Marathi audiences have always loved Dada Kondke and his films. This speaks for the fact they are progressive and are open to all kinds of cinema. Plus, it would be interesting for them to see a woman director deal with a male-centric adult comedy," she replies.
The Hindi remake of the film doesn't deter her either. "Marathi and Hindi audiences are different in their own way, and every other filmmaker - big or small - seems to be eager to treat old cinema themes in a new way. It's a classic case of old wine in a new bottle, and in the end your film's honesty will set you apart from the other so-called remakes," says Patil.
