On Rituparno Ghosh-s birth anniversary today, we pay tribute to the prolific filmmaker by remembering 10 of his best works.
Unishe April 1994 -- The film that was directed, produced and written by Rituparno Ghosh won Debashree Roy her a National Award for Best Actress.
It also won the National Award for Best Feature Film. A touching story of a mother and daughter, the film established Ghosh's name in the Bengali film industry.
Chokher Bali 2003 -- With an impressive cast of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Prosenjit and Raima Sen, the film about a young widow's journey won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali.
Based on a novel by Rabindranath Tagore, the film also had a successful run of the festival circuits around the world.
Raincoat 2004 -- The film won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. Once again, Ghosh portrayed his inner sensitivity on screen with a poignant story between two lovers separated by the cruel blow of fate.
The Last Lear 2007 -- The film won a National Award for Best Feature Film in English. Starring multiple Bollywood actors, several critics praised Amitabh Bachchan for his stellar performance. A telling story about theatre and cinema, it wowed the audience across the festival circuits.
Shab Charitro Kalpanik 2008 -- The film won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali. Prosenjit starred yet again in this Ghosh film that also featured Bipasha Basu. Bips plays the wife of a poet, who discovers the true essence of her husband only after his demise.
Dahan 1997 -- What's interesting about this film is that both the heroines -- Rituparna Sengupta and Indrani Halder won National Awards for Best Actress. Ghosh won the National Award for Best Screenplay. The film candidly captures a lone woman's fight for justice.
Bariwali 1999 -- Starring Kirron Kher, the film won her a National Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of a lonely middle-aged woman.
Utsab 2000 -- Ghosh won yet another Best Director National Award for this family drama with the annual Durga Puja as the film's backdrop.
Abohoman 2010 -- The film won three National Awards. Ghosh was once again adjudged the Best Director. While the film was planned to be made in Hindi with Vidya Balan, Ghosh later changed his mind and cast veterans like Dipankar De and Mamata Shankar in the Bengali language film. De starred as a film director who falls in love with a young actress.
Chitrangada: the Crowning Wish 2012 -- Ghosh explores sexuality in this film that he himself starred in. Though the film failed to get a rousing welcome, Ghosh firmly believed that his creation would play an active part in bringing about a social change.
