Breaking into Bollywood with last year's 'Udta Punjab' was a milestone for Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh. But the adulation that he received following his recent television debut took him by surprise.
"I always felt people like my films and songs, but everything paled in comparison to my television stint. The kind of reach and appreciation that TV has given me, I couldn't have got otherwise. It has given me more fame than ever," he says.
It was his mother who convinced him to take up TV offers, he confesses. "My parents haven't seen any of my films, so I can't talk to them about my performances. But my mother likes to watch TV. When the offer [to judge Rising Superstars] came, she was more excited than me."
Diljit, who plays a superhero in his next, 'Super Singh', says the idea of wearing a cape originated with a meme. "Four years ago, someone had morphed my face with Spiderman's and it went viral. While it was merely a joke, I seriously thought of playing a superhero in a turban."
The actor recalls the struggle to find producers to back the project. "After two years of hunting in vain, we'd decided to shelve it, but thankfully, Ekta Kapoor came on board."
