Renowned writer, columnist, humourist and playwright Taarak Mehta has passed away at the age of 87 after prolonged illness.
Taarak Mehta breathed his last in Ahmedabad, Gujarat today (Wednesday, March 1), his family confirmed. They also intend to donate Taarak Mehta's body to science.
A relative of the writer, Atul Bhatt said, "He died of old age." Atul Bhatt is a doctor.

Taarak Mehta is best known for his Gujarati column 'Duniya Ne Undha Chasma'. The popular TV show 'Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah' is based on this column.
His humourous column first appeared in Chitralekha in March 1971. Taarak Mehta has also written six popular Gujarati plays.
He was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award, in 2015.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani, among others, took to Twitter to pay tribute to Taarak Mehta.
