What: Spatial Arrangements of Colors, Lines, Forms and Desires is an exhibition of significant works by Vadodara-based artist, Surendran Nair, executed over the last four years. Nair's work presents iconographies derived from literature, mythology, socio-political histories and narratives from memory. They address pertinent contemporary anxieties, which Nair articulates in his own inimitable style.

Shehrazade

How: The present tableau is a continuation of Nair's project Cuckoonebulopolis, which he started in 2000. Nair usually creates a loose notion of utopia, in his work. "I am not as interested in what utopia has to offer as alternatives, as I am in the basic premise of it being critical of the existent order," admits the artist. He constructs his vivid narratives against this backdrop, attempting also, in his words, to "explore the possibilities of imagining something secular."

Dunyazade

Where: "This particular series could be considered as an attempt from my part at exploring the possibilities of imagining something secular. Some of these works are, in that sense, (personal) responses to some of the problems that we are entrenched in," Nair explains.
