The geometric patterns of Zellij are symbolic of Morocco
The geometric mosaic patterns of Moroccan monuments have long been symbolic of the architecture of the tiny African nation. Those mesmerised by these kaleidoscopic patterns can learn the art this Sunday at a Moroccan mosaic workshop.
Organised by art community Bombay Drawing Room (BDR), the workshop will teach enthusiasts to create the colourful patterns of the ancient art, called Zellij, on canvas, and is open for beginners too. "As an architect, I have always been fascinated by the mosaics and stained glass seen at the mosques of Morocco, Iran and Persia. Similar styles can be seen as part of Mughal architecture [on Humayun's Tomb] for instance, though the ratio of floral patterns is higher in the Mughal style. The original form requires a furnace and other professional materials to complete the tile, and is not meant for beginners. Our workshops are aimed at amateurs too, and designed in such a way that people don't get discouraged or overwhelmed," says Snehal Patil, founder of BDR.
The workshop is open to beginners, as well as experts
With that thought in mind, this workshop will use boxed canvas as the base material, which gives the appearance of the tile when completed and can be hung too. This workshop will be conducted by interior designer and artist Riddhi Salla.
