Music festival Bandish is back to pay tribute to Indian composers; this time the focus is on compositions by Tagore and Naushad, and includes performances by Gulzar

Music festival Bandish

Bandish, an annual event organised by the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), pays tribute to legendary composers whose collective works constitute our musical heritage and continue to inspire modern-day performers.

The upcoming edition will celebrate composers such as Rabindranath Tagore, Alladiya Khan, Faiyaz Khan, Vilayat Hussain Khan, Jaidev, Naushad and Madan Mohan. Their Bandish (structured melodic and rhythmic compositions) will be performed by artistes such as Manjari Asnare Kelkar, Rashid Khan, Gulzar, Ajoy Chakraborty and Javed Ali.

This year, the event will showcase Rabindrasangeet, which is similar to Indian Classical music, as well as feature compositions from the Indian film industry that are based on ragas.

Dr Suvarnalata Rao, Head-Programming (Indian Music), NCPA, explains that the event showcases composers who are not explored enough, adding that, "Composers like Alladiya Khan, Faiyaz Khan and Vilayat Hussain Khan are prolific and their compositions cannot be fathomed in just one edition of the festival. The artistes who are paying tribute to them have their versions of the renditions."

"Naushad, Jaidev and Madan Mohan are legendary composers whose compositions were predominantly known to be classically inclined. These composers used Indian elements, ragas, taals and Indian Classical instruments in their compositions," adds Rao.

From July 18 to 20
