The Ironman triathlon is the most challenging athletic feat in the world and involves a 3.86 km swim, a 180.25 km bicycle ride and a marathon (42.20 km) without a break. Some Indians, however, have taken up this challenge and the numbers are increasing.

This week, the hosts of SimbliFIED, who interview people doing something interesting professionally or otherwise, interacted with two ironman athletes from Mumbai, Mehul Ved and Nupur Shikhare. During the interaction, they came up with interesting nuggets about the history of the sport in India and their own journeys.

Both, in fact, decided to complete the Ironman a little later in life after they had begun working. Ved shared how he had figured out a way to cycle to office at Andheri (E) from Marine Lines and later, also ran the distance at one point. Shikhare spoke about how he ran his first half marathon accidentally. Both of them agreed that though the Ironman challenge is physical, completing it is more gruelling psychologically.

That said, they also pointed out that you cannot just get excited about Ironman one fine morning and decide to complete it. It takes a lot of preparation and hard work often stretching across many years.
