Once upon a time, the city of Bombay was the nucleus around which writers, poets, filmmakers and literary voices represented all languages. Urdu writers found the spirit and character of the city liberating enough to give wings to their thoughts and words.
Naseeruddin Shah
This continued till the 1970s and now there is a dearth of voices. In what promises to be a deep exploration of the topic, the evening will see a dialogue between Nandita Das, Danish Hussain, Rakhshanda Jalil and Javed Anand followed by a reading of various texts by Naseeruddin Shah. They will discuss whether Urdu writers in today's world have the same kind of freedom as their predecessors did in Mumbai in the 1940s.
Panelist Nandita Das elaborates, "I grew up in Delhi where most speak Hindustani - an amalgamation of Hindi and Urdu - but making Manto has opened up a new world for me. I hope to share what I have learnt about the language through his writings."
