Sign up for a unique 10K marathon along the mangrove stretch around Malad, as part of World Wetlands Day celebrations
Marathons are no more head-turners. The distance covered varies but they are regularly held across countries and states. The newest run in the city is set to promote mangroves. The road running parallel to Malad Mindspace, a business park, will witness a unique 10K run (Mangrove Marathon) this weekend, which will be flagged off from Inorbit Mall.
The process started on February 2, which was World Wetlands Day. "We had a campaign inside the mall about mangroves. The shoppers were enlightened about the importance of the landmark area in the city. We wanted to know their knowledge about the mangroves, which protect the city from encroachment by the sea or erosion. Similarly, they also guard the sea from pollution," says Paresh Pimpale, one of the members of the Mangrove Marathon team.

Pimpale believes the marathon will raise awareness about mangroves. "They have been on the fringe of human imagination purely because they are inaccessible. People need to understand their value," he adds.
While the online registration closed on Monday, a few spots will be up for grabs a day before the event. "We can have at the most 20 people on the spot, they need to come and register on the bib distribution day," he suggests. The participants will be served breakfast, a timing certificate and an official t-shirt.
