About 8600 books related to Mahatma Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave have been sold in the last six days at an exhibition organised in Mumbai by a trust in its bid to promote Gandhian values.
The exhibition was organised by the Bombay Sarvodaya Mandal (BSM), a trust, and Gandhi Book Centre, with the financial assistance from Shree Babulnath Mandir Charities, at Hutatma Chowk and Gandhi Book Centre at Nana Chowk from January 29 to February 3 to commemorate the 70th death anniversary of the Father of the Nation.
A senior BSM office-bearer said the rise in the sale of books underlines the contemporary relevance of the Mahatma's teachings. "In the digital world, it is a known fact that books are experiencing a slow death. But a week-long exhibition-cum-sale of Gandhian books proves that Gandhiji's teachings are more relevant today than ever, especially when his thoughts find many takers in the younger generations," said Tulsidas Somaiya, Managing Trustee of the Gandhi Book Centre, run by the BSM. He said "Gandhi Autobiography", "Talks o the Gita", and "Selected Works of Mahatma Gandhi" were among the top-selling books at the exhibition.

"Other Gandhi books on economics, politics, education, law, religion, health etc. were also popular. Most of the visitors were youngsters. Many visitors requested to organise this kind of exhibitions at various places throughout the year. Our website www.mkgandhi.org is a comprehensive resource for free downloading of e-books, literature and photographs," he said.
Underlining that Gandhian thought is still followed and searched across the world, Somaiya said the website receives thousands of hits every day from over 200 countries and also receives feedback from netizens who have read books on Gandhi. "Such an overwhelming response (from the Gandhi's followers across the world) makes us to believe that many people have decided to follow the path of truth and non-violence and are striving to sustain morality by practicing Gandhiji's philosophy which is the need of the hour," he said.
