If you'd like to soak in sounds from the Hungarian string tradition or relive the works of Mozart, Franz Joseph Hadyn and Sergei Rachmaninoff, head to a two-day performance by the Kodaly Quartet at the NCPA.

The quartet has been enthralling city patrons annually since 2010, and this performance will mark their sixth visit to Mumbai. Founded by four students of the Franz (Ferenc) Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest in 1966, the chamber music ensemble consists of Attila Falvay (first violin), Ferenc Bango (second violin), Janos Fejervari (viola) and Gyorgy Edger (cello). The ensemble is known for keeping the Hungarian string quartet tradition alive and has even made it contemporary over time.

The members explain, "There have been great composers of string quartets like Haydn and Beethoven who worked in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Our style of quartet playing is more Classical (from the period 1750 to 1820) than romantic or scientific. Of course, later came Kodaly and Bartok who were Hungarian composers and they also composed quartets, but they require a different style - more Folk like Gypsy - that we also use in playing their music."

For this edition, the quartet will perform pieces like Rachmaninoff: Romance and Scherzo and Czech composer Bedrich Smetana's String quartet No.1 in E minor (From my Life) among others. "Most of the music that we will play in our progamme has not been played earlier. We have recorded all the quartets of Beethoven, Haydn and Schubert," the quartet shares.

On April 14 and April 15, 7 pm
At Experimental Theatre, NCPA, Nariman Point.
