Chariots, up in steam
Wednesday-Tuesday, 11 am to 7 pm: Between 1979 and 1997, water colourist Pradip Maitra spent many days and nights by the dirty railway tracks and shabby locomotive shades in north Kolkata. Those days, Maitra was self-admittedly obsessed with steam railway engines and boggies.

The exhibition, Chariot of Civilisation, charts his rather nostalgic encounters with steam engines and wagons. His work is inspired by watching engines undergoing morning rituals and being readied for long journeys. Maitra also takes into account how, after an engine is sold, the owner comes and arranges to cut it in pieces for easier transport to elsewhere. His art hopes to capture what he no longer sees in person.

Cities of words and music
Friday, 5.30 pm: Author and journalist Naresh Fernandes has written extensively about Mumbai and the social, political and cultural forces, which have shaped the city's over the years.

At his talk, ‘Listening to Cities', Fernandes tries to infuse more life into the writing about this city by giving perspectives which are usually sidelined. Fernandes will share his experiences as a reporter, the helplessness of being able to cover only fragments of the stories assigned to him, working on tight deadlines and the fear of distorting the truth in an article.

He will also discuss his belief that music and musicians, often tell stories more profoundly and beautifully than words ever do. In the presentation, he will stitch together his attempts to listen to urban voices in Mumbai, New York and Lisbon - narratives which are usually overpowered and neglected.

Artiste, up close
Friday, till April 25, 11 am-7 pm: The photography exhibition, Leap In Time, comprises photographs by photojournalists Erich Salomon and Barbara Klemm. A part of this exhibition is an exclusive ‘India Series' by Klemm from her visit to India in the 1980s.

Klemm and Salomon see themselves as journalists rather than artists. Both have tried to produce unique documents of their time.

Klemm's India Series emphasises her philosophy of not staging her photographs, though she does not use hidden cameras. Klemm's unobtrusive presence made it possible for her photographs' subjects to carry on what they were doing without being distracted.
