Roll the dice, and get lucky at a board games session that trips on nostalgia
Before indoor games came to mean those played only on the computer, there existed a world of long afternoons of card and board games. Till the 90s, before the explosive progress of the Internet, bonds were made and broken over these games.
Monopoly, Scrabble, Pictionary, Business or Guess Who made perfect birthday gifts and losing a tile
was sacrilegious.
Now, House of Wow, a creative space in Bandra, is recreating that era for the nostalgic with a board games night next week. Riddhi Gupta, the owner, says that the idea behind the initiative was to reintroduce children and adults to games that can trigger their grey cells and activate the mind. "Strategy-based board games used to seem cool to own at some point while growing up and then, technology boom happened. So, if we have introduced phones and gadgets to our younger ones, how can we blame them for knowing only that. We want to bring out the child in every adult for a change, especially since the world is moving at the speed of light," she says. Here's what to expect:
The Settlers Of Catan: The board game requires players to assume the roles of settlers in an uncharted island of Catan. Each player tries to build and develop holdings (settlements) while trading and acquiring resources. The first player to score 10 points wins.
Splendor: The multiplayer board game was nominated for the 2014 Game of the Year. Players are gem merchants during the Renaissance era. Here, two to four players compete to collect the most prestige points to win.
Sequence: It is a board and card game. The board shows all the cards. The players must compete to create rows, columns or diagonals of five connected checkers. The game ends when someone has reached a specified number of connections
Risk: Possibly the most popular, mass-market war game, Risk revolves around the conquest of the world. Win the game by gaining reinforcements of territories, controlling each continent, and attacking other plays in the game.
Mysterium: It is a cooperative game of ghosts, murder and hilarious incompetence. One player takes the role of the ghost while everyone else represents a medium. The ghost must solve the crime recalling all the suspects.
