Randolph Correia's new album under his FUNC moniker is a tribute to a girl he met, and Mumbai

Musician Randolph Correia's latest album is probably the quickest he's ever made. "It happened in half an hour of working around with some of my beats. The music is the result of my flow of thoughts at that time," says Correia about his 11-track album, The Lover.

As the title suggests, the songs that also feature his vocals (a first for Correia) are about meeting a special woman and the feelings that follow. However, being the artiste that he is, his music does not veer towards the "cheesy Valentine's Day" category. "It's the result of a mix of my experiences with the city and its people. There was also this girl I was chilling with who triggered the whole thing [album]. It's like revisiting the many times we met. Hopefully, she will come to the launch gig," he smiles. The gig tonight will also include a set by Raxit Tewari under his solo act, Your Chin.

The vocals in The Lover's songs, recorded by Correia on his phone with a basic USB mic, were originally references for other vocalists. "But the vocals ended up sounding perfect for the music I had made, so I decided to let it be. They are honest and raw in nature, which is interesting for me because the music that I usually do is very produced and processed," feels the artiste.

Musically, the album is mellow in pace compared to his other songs. Correia loves making beats that make people dance but had always wanted to make a post-party album. "That's when all the interesting conversations happen. It's the kind of music you sit, chill or even space out with."

Catchy, glitch genre-style instrumentals feature prominently throughout the album and the lyrics are quite direct -I Know A Place is about getting in between the sheets after a date. His signature style of blending genres remains strong in this album. How does he manage to merge things seamlessly we ask, "It's tricky, but I equate it to how I like to have a conversation with people. You don't want to repeat the same thing but there's a certain flow where you don't want to sound like 15 different people saying 15 things. You prefer to just be. It's an instinct; the kind of music I like listening to with my friends or while sipping chai. If you are in your zone and comfortable, it's easier to write music too," he says. At the gig, Correia will also be playing tracks from the follow up to this album.
