Deepak Cinema, Lower Parel

Some things manage to stand the test of time, and one example of this is Deepak Cinema in the city's Lower Parel area.

The light blue-and-white, run-down structure sticks out amid the swanky landscape.

A slice of the city that misses the eye

This single-screen theatre started screenings in the pre-independence era, since 1926, and is still running shop despite changing times and preferences.

The cinema hall has managed to stay afloat and continues to draw in queues of films buffs; we think the moderate ticket charges (Balcony: Rs 40, Stall: Rs 30) might have something to do with this.

It screens all kinds of films, from Bhojpuri to new Hindi releases. At a time when multiplexes are doing brisk business and most single screen theatres are shutting shop, Deepak Cinema is determined to challenge the odds.
