Emergence rock at high spirits

Rock music lovers will get a chance to meet one of India's most popular rock band this Sunday. Emergence, the band whose music reflects Krishna McKenzie's journey in India over the last 16 years, will perform at High Spirits. Apart from music, the band members also share a common love for organic farming. Based in Auroville, Pondicherry, Emergence line up includes Krishna McKenzie (Guitarist/Vocalist), Karthick Iyer (Violin/Vocalist), Mishko M'Ba (Bassist) and Suresh Bascara (drum). The members prefer to keep a low profile even though they have played across the US and UK including at the famous Glastonbury Festival. The band has just returned from a tour of the US where they performed at the John F Kennedy Centre for Performing Arts in Washington DC. Music lovers will get to hear Indian acoustic pop numbers with a mixture of British and Indian classical music. The music will range from Rock, Jazz to Funk. Their last album Closer to God, was based on themes like self sustainability and organic farming.

A tribute to my guru

Renowned Kathak dancer Asawaree Patankar and founder of Udgaar, will pay tribute to her Guru kathak exponent Rohini Bhate through a musical presentation. For the past three years, Patankar has every year organised such an event to pay tribute to her guru. "This concert will be a blend of dance, song and instrumental. I will follow the Rohini Gharana. My guru had her own dance style which we students consider as a separate Gharana," says Patankar. There will also be a solo tabla performance by Hetal Mehta and a demonstration of Shivavandana by Patankar, written by kathak doyen, Maharaj Bindadin, and choreographed by Bhate. The dance performance will be followed by a Jhaptaal performance, demonstrating the technical aspects of kathak and a Prahlad Katha piece, in which Patankar will depict the story of Bhakt Prahlad through dance and Abhinaya. Leading vocalist Padmatai Talwalkar from the Jaipur and Gwalior Gharana, will also be performing at the event.

It's going to be an interesting presentation of music and art this Sunday when well-known musician Pushkar Lele and artist Milind Mulick will present a collaborative project titled Triveni-Rang. The event will witness Pushkar singing nine Triveni bhajans of Sant Kabir, Soordaas and Meera Bai meanwhile Mulick will capture the words on canvas. Music has always been a source of inspiration for the two popular artists. "Apart from the lyrics of a song, its rhythm and feel is capable of evoking strong emotions in a sensitive artiste's mind, which flows easily and effortlessly in his artworks", shares artist Milind Mulick.
