'Space: The final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilisations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.'

The film won
the Oscar for Best Make-up at the 82nd Academy Awards, making it the
first film from the franchise to win an Oscar

Diehard fans of Star Trek would have these lines memorised, and just like the voice-over that stated the starship's purpose during the opening credits, the Star Trek franchise served as a gateway to the future for millions sitting spellbound in front of their tellies during the 1960s.

The science fiction TV series, created by Gene Roddenberry, went on to become one of the most successful franchises that led to the creation ofu00a0 dozens of video and computer games, novels, travelling museums, movies and even a theme park in Las Vegas.

The series followed the adventures of the starship Enterprise and its crew, Captain James T Kirk, first officer Mr Spock and chief medical officer Leonard McCoy. Here's trivia on the series for nostalgic fans...

Song storm
The theme song for Star Trek, originally titled Where No Man Has Gone Before, is familiar even for those who have never watched the series or films. The four-note opening to William Shatner's famous narration was written by Alexander Courage, though unknown to him, the creator of the series, Gene Roddenberry, had written lyrics for the tune.

Roddenberry wrote the lyrics so that he could claim a 50% share of royalties. Courage allegedly had a 'handshake deal' with Roddenberry a couple of years earlier, which gave the latter the option of composing the lyrics.

Courage protested, albeit in vain, that although the agreement may have been legal, it was unethical. An unsympathetic Roddenberry responded by saying, 'Hey, I have to get money from somewhere. I'm sure not going to get it out of the profits of Star Trek.'
