Inspired from the 2013 cult classic TV show, 'Attack on Titan', this beat 'em up game makes gore fun
Attack on Titan or Shingeki no Kyojin is a Japanese anime/manga that went on to become a cult classic in a very short while. The story is about a city and a character called Eren Yeager's fight against the Titans. The Titans are a bunch of monsters that look like caricatures of humans that go around eating other human beings. The game manages to capture the essence of what it is to be in a world where monsters are on the loose.
We didn't try the online multiplayer and most of our time was dedicated in the single-player mode. We started off with the tutorials, which aren't well made and could confuse, more than educate. I had to play the tutorials a couple of times before I figured what the controls were and how I could use them to attack a Titan. Not to mention, the camera just goes everywhere.
On the TV show, one of the best things was the speed experienced while using the Omni-Directional Mobility (ODM) gear, a gas powered anchor system that lets the warriors reach the impossibly tall Titans so that they can attack specific areas with scary precision. The game does a good job of reproducing this feeling and it is easily the most fun part of the game. The ODM gear is nifty and you will swoop in to rescue stranded teammates within a matter of seconds.
This game is a big change from Koei Tecmo's usual Dynasty Warriors formula where all you do is take on huge swarms of enemies by hacking and slashing through them. Here, each Titan takes some time to defeat, unless you manage to go for the nape every single time (cutting the nape of the Titan is equivalent to a headshot, resulting in instant death). If you are the type that gets grossed out with gore, you can turn off gore in the settings.
The AI support in the game is useful, and will actually help you take down the Titan. The graphics are not the best, but are polished enough to seem passable.
If you are a fan of the show, this game is worth getting. If you haven't watched the 2013 show yet, you might want to see it before you start off, because the game assumes you have watched it and just begins from the first major battle. This one is highly recommended for fans.
