Love is a word that carries a halo around itself when spoken but ironically when it violates society's norms it remains no more than a four letter wording meaning little to the public. A sublime love story takes inspiration from the life of Punjabi poet and writer Amrita Pritam who had to ride troubled waters in her amorous relationship. She lived life on her own, hardly paying any heed to the societal norms. Amrita in Sanskrit means immortality and so does her love story. The play is brought alive through her writings and inputs from her lifelong companion Imroze.

In her shoes
Dr Lavlin Thadani, who plays Amrita in the play directed by M S Sathyu is very excited. "I share a wonderful relationship with Amrita. She was my neighbour and as a teenager we spent a lot of time together as indulging in jugalbandis. I've watched Amrita and Imroze very closely and I'm yet to come across a couple with such love," she said. Asked about her director, Lavlin elaborated, "I've worked with Sathyu on two films Sookha (Hindi) and Bara (Kannad) earlier so I was very comfortable under his guidance this time too."

The director said, "This play is my tribune to talented people like Amrita and Imroz of the bygone era. This 100 minutes play is an insight in to the unknown life of these famous people." Other artists starring in the play are Vijay Nagiyal, Mangat Ram, Pratima Virmani, Jayati, Sanjeev and Sheetal Handoo.

The producer K K Kohli elaborated on the technique of the play. "It is a narrative play and an alter ego technique was used to break the monotony of the character and highlight the introspective aspect of Lavlin's character.' Pratima plays the alter ego of Amrita's character. "In the beginning some Punjabi dialogues were hard to remember but Sathyu was very encouraging. My experience with this play has been very good and memorable."

Did you know?
Amrita's love interest, Imroze, was a man much younger and a partner for over five decades. Their relationship blossomed in the spiritual forces of universe. Amrita and Imroze lived together for fifty years under
the same roof but in separate rooms.
