1. How did you end up composing this promotional track for Ang Lee's Life of Pi?
I was approached by Fox Star Studios India and Sony Music to write this track. We had a few chats about what the vibe of the track had to be sitting comfortable among various aspects.
2. Could you tell is a bit about the track?
The track is a Hindi song, which has a strident and triumphant feel to it. Obviously, it is not any interpretation of the movie but a vague parallel as that was the approach required. There are many different meanings to the song, the simplest being about trapped in a physical space but flying all over the world, unhindered. I had a very clear idea of what I wanted from the song and then worked with KC Loy, who wrote some amazingly beautiful lyrics and the gorgeous voice of Suraj Jagan bringing it alive! Apart from this, the other major sound in the track is my flute.
3. Ang Lee has always been a favourite with the Oscars. Do you see your song repeating the Jai Ho success?
I do not write a song for any awards. To write a great song, in my opinion, depends on the people involved with me in the process. Success is an aftermath and a side effect of a creative process and not something one can pre-empt. Slumdog (Millionaire) was never even meant to get out on the big screen. Apparently, it was a straight-to-video movie that picked up momentum on its own. So, at that point Jai Ho would probably have disappeared, actually! So, it is lucky to have been a hit. I write with my heart and mean to go straight to your heart. This sometimes works too.u00a0
