Crispu00a0white cotton sarees with red border, Baluchari sarees, dhoti kurtas, Baul singers, sholapith items, bamboo and cane furniture, Dokra art, terracotta craft -- it's still some weeks to Durga Puja but a mini Bengal has been set up in the Capital already.

Baul singers performing a lively number

Organised by Central Cottage Industries Emporium, an exposition-cum-sale featuring the artefacts, handicraft and heirloom from West Bengal along with paintings of Tagore is open for people till September 14. The event offers a unique opportunity to purchase items like saris, furniture and paintings created by artisans of Shantiniketan and the surrounding areas, while Bauli singers -- with ektara and
dholak and singing Rabindrasangeet -- transport you to Visva Bharati.

If you are looking for artwork to hang on your living room wall then batik-on-cloth paintings are an excellent choice. The creators of these paintings hail from Nadia (near Santiniketan) and the lines and contours made in the paintings follow the handy work of Tagore himself. Handicrafts on display include metal embossed panels, terracotta tiles based on Tagore's paintings, Dokra casting figures, batik hand painted panels, bell metal products, tribal paintings and more.

An element of recycling and preserving the environment is also present at the venue as many handicraft products are made of recast copper. Discarded copper has been melted, recast and moulded into designs like fruit holders and flower vases. Much attention to detail has been paid while finalising the product.

To everyone's delight
There is something for everyone at the exposition. Women can select from Tangail and Dhanekhali saris, which are known for the beautiful borders. Puja saris with typical red and gold borders are in abundance too. Men won't be disappointed either. A variety of zamindari style kurtas and dhotis are available here. While one can fetch a saree for Rs 2,000, the paintings range between Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,000.
