While cartoonist Mario Miranda may be renowned for his distinct style of sketching, it's a lesser known fact that he was also an avid traveller. Over the years, as he was invited to exhibit his cartoons internationally, he visited USA and Germany, among other countries. In true Miranda style, he documented the sights and sounds of these destinations through hisu00a0cartoons.
Nearly 100 such cartoons are presently on display at the Aks Art Gallery. The selection also includes some of his popular works depicting Goa (his birthplace, and where he was based) and Original Pocket Cartoons that were published in newspapers. Miranda, who passed away in 2011, worked for years as a cartoonist for a national daily and created memorable cartoon characters in his Pocket Cartoon series that captured the social life of the city. His illustrations were also featured in several books. The exhibition has been organised by the Mario Gallery and has been curated by Gerard da Cunha.
Relive the magic
Speaking about the exhibition, da Cunha says, "'Mario's World is an exhibition of Mario's travel pictures from Europe. The pictures cover France, England, Germany and Portugal. They are mostly in colour and are his best works. The European works have rarely been seen and are a tribute to Mario's versatility as a fine artist. They also reflect his mastery of capturing the essence of a place. The pictures are all from the Mario Gallery in Goa, which has an archive of 10,000 of his drawings. The Original Pocket Cartoons are from the Miranda family and are from the daily newspapers."

The images are being exhibited as part of a collaboration between the Aks Gallery and the Mario Gallery to popularise good art. Da Cunha adds that the Diwali season is also a good time for buying gifts and these make for great gifting options as well.
