The 12th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) begins today and promises enough national and international silver screen magic for a cinematic start to the year.

The festival received whopping 791 entries this year of which 224 were international. This massive list was narrowed down to a 101 films for the final selection spanning documentaries, short and animation films.
Not only is the number of the entries encouraging, the total prize money this year sums up to Rs 63.5 lakhs with the best documentary, fiction and animation film in both international and nation section taking home Rs 5 lakhs each.

Apart form several first timers, the competition section also includes veteran names from our country such as Anand Patwardhan (Jai Bhim Comrade) and Nina Sabnani (It's the Same Story). Other interesting documentaries to watch are One Day Ahead of Democracy by Amlan Datta and a documentary of musician Anthony Gonsalves.
The festival is celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore by screening In the land of Chhinnopatro by Saibal Mitra, Rabindranath Tagore by Satyajit Ray, Tagore Painting by Ranbir Ray, and Dreams of Rabindranath Tagore by KG Das.
Satyajit Ray, a documentary on the filmmaker by Shyam Benegal and Inner eye by Ray himself marks the centenary birth anniversary of the award-winning filmmaker. Country specific films from Netherlands, Venezuela, Hong Kong and Afghanistan are also a part of the special screenings. The festival is also paying a tribute to noted film director Mani Kaul, who passed away last year.
Students of Prasad Film School; Chennai, Satyajit Ray Film and TV Institute; Kolkata, National School of Design; Ahmedabad, Danish Film Institue; Denmark, Whistling Woods International, Mumbai and FTII; Pune (decade-wise film package) will also be screening their works.

The Indian Documentary Producers Association (IDPA) will be conducting a workshop on how to make movies using an SLR.
