Britain will become the first country in Europe to introduce the measure once it is enshrined in law, Daily Mail reported Monday.

The move is part of the tough new rules on tobacco firms the government plans to announce Wednesday on the national No Smoking Day. Australia and the European parliament are also planning to introduce the measure.

According to the 2008-09 figures, smokers made up 22 percent of the population in Britain. It is expected that the plain packaging will make cigarettes less attractive.
