Take time out for a special lecture on Ludwig van Beethoven, the most famous and influential composers of all time
Less than four days from now, the Symphony Orchestra of India's (SOI) Eleventh Celebrity Concert Season will begin in the city. This season promises everything from the towering tradition of Beethoven's Fifth, to the adventurous orchestrations of Prokofiev; from the warmth of Tchaikovsky to the proud nationalism of Dvorak.
If you're a Western music virgin (as most of us are), head to Godrej Dance Theatre tomorrow evening for the lecture, Understanding Beethoven: A Man of His Time, by Zane Dalal, the resident conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of India at the National Centre for Performing Arts.
In a bid to help bring bring Western music to a wider audience in India, Dalal has initiated a lecture series in music appreciation as well as pre-concert lectures since the last few years.
The lecture titled Unders-tanding Beethoven examines the impact of Beethoven on musical thought and language and seeks to frame the composers works with a historical perspective of the time in which they were written. Dalal will take you on a journey of revelation through the processes that bring Beethoven's music to life, including a topical survey of his nine symphonies.
