What are the causes of infertility in women?
Female infertility is on the rise. It accounts for about 40% of infertility amongst couples trying to conceive. Causes are broadly classified as factors affecting the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes and others.
Some causes of female infertility such as advanced maternal age or inherited conditions are not preventable. Other lifestyle factors like obesity and rising alcohol and tobacco use are known to affect fertility hormones and egg quality, these can be controlled.
We are now seeing increasing number of cases of Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) which affects the egg quality and egg release.
Other diseases like Tuberculosis and Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) can lead to blockage in the fallopian tubes preventing the egg meeting the sperm to form an embryo.
