What happens when a couple completes 25 years of togetherness? Find out in this English play by Avinash Daniel
Love lasts while nothing else does. If this is true then why do people feel love flies out of the window after years of marriage? Like most urban couples, Joel and Samantha ask this rhetorical question after more than two decades of being together in the English play Orgasm. A production by the city-based theatre group Cult Entertainment, this romantic comedy is written and directed by Avinash Daniel. The director admits that the play is inspired by the famous British sitcom Coupling and various articles on modern relationships. Like the British series, Orgasm also discusses marriage, sex and relationships but with an Indian touch, promises Daniel.
"I always wanted to tell a story that looks at the funny side of relationships. It's not easy at all because most of the time relationships are very serious to people. Orgasm is a different take on couples and deals with varying issues. We have managed to poke humour as we look at the funny side of every problem," says Daniel. He confides that Orgasm asks the much debated question-why marriage? The play not only focuses on emotional issues but also brings out the diverse sexual problems that couples face at various stages of their relationships.
Joel and Samantha has been in a relationship for more than 25 years out of which they have been married for 20 years. One fine day at a crucial point in their lives, they sit back and look at the incidents that impacted them as a couple. As the couple takes a walk down memory lane, they take the audience through pleasant incidents, romantic and sensual moments and a few disappointing ones as well. And through their journey, Daniel assures the audience a glimpse of quirks and benefits of Indian marriages. Orgasm, according to him is about woman philosophy versus man philosophy and the differences in their views on marriage and sex.
Daniel shares, "He's the cute hen pecked husband who just does not know how to rebel. I am sure the expression 'weaker sex' will be redefined for the ones who watch the play."
However, there are six actors playing the characters of Joel and Samantha to show stages before and after marriage phases. Daniel describes Orgasm as a memory play that looks at modern urban Indian relationships in an unorthodox way. He assures that the title of the play has little to do with the subject but cautions that the play is clearly for an adult audience. "A lot of people have been asking me this question. Some feel it's a marketing stunt some feel it's a crowd puller. But the name has great relevance to the play which will be revealed only in the end," reveals Daniel.
